Buying stair carpet is not something you do every day (thank goodness, given the cost!) so you may be unfamiliar with choosing one. Here are five tips to help make the process easier.

1. Buy a Quality Carpet

It is no good installing cheap carpet on stairs as it will show wear very quickly especially on the edges of the treads and bare patches may occur. This means that you need the heaviest grade of carpet if you want your carpet to last. You will probably find that a 80% wool 20% nylon mixture will give the best value for money and if you choose a carpet with a slight twist in the pile it will help hide any soiling too.

2. Choose the Right Color

It is best to choose a neutral carpet for hall and stairs as so many rooms lead from them and you do not want carpets to clash at doorways. However, choose a warm neutral like beige rather than a cold one like gray so that your hall seems more welcoming.

3. Get an Estimate

It is difficult to estimate how much carpet you will need for stairs especially if you have a turn and landing half way up the stairs or you are carpeting your hall too. Get the store to do an estimate for you and quote you a final price so that you know how much the final cost will be.

4. Choose Professional Installation

Always choose professional carpet installation for stairs. This area is more difficult to install than any other and getting it wrong can result in a dangerously loose or damaged carpet.

5. Consider Buying Extra Carpet

Buy a little extra carpet and ask for a foot or so to be tucked under so that it can be used to re-install the carpet to even out wear at a later date. This can add a few years to the life of your carpet. You might also like to buy extra so that you can have a matching runner made for your hall if you are not carpeting that area.
