If you are remodeling a room you may not have thought about window valances. After all you have probably spent countless hours looking at carpet samples, wallpaper and paint colors, and fabric swatches for curtains, furniture covers and/or bedding and that is just enough to cover the basic choices you have to make for your room. But when you are thinking about window treatments at least consider valances as well as curtains and blinds.
You see valances perform a useful function in hiding the drapery rods. This may not be so essential if you are planning to install beautiful poles and finials but most drapery rods are downright ugly and deserve to be covered. In fact one of the big no-nos in interior design is to have white plastic curtain rails on show. So don’t commit that crime whatever you do in your beautiful new room.
By adding a valance to the top of your windows you can add a more decorative touch which frames your windows beautifully and this can either enhance a great view or make up for a less than perfect one.
The valance can be made to match the window curtains perfectly or provide a contrast perhaps with matching trim. Styles of valance are available for every style of decoration. Romantic style rooms will be enhanced by a scarf type valance which drapes elegantly over a special drapery rod while formal rooms would suit Ascot style valances or crisp swags and tails.
It can seem like an added complication and expense to add valances but it is always worth enhancing your windows as they are one of the main architectural features in a room. You will find that your room seems much better put together as a result especially if you compare pictures before putting up your valance to those taken afterwards.
