There are a lot of people out there who struggle with alcoholism and would like to stop drinking, but they do not necessarily know how to go about doing so. There is more than one path that can get you clean and sober, but it might take some experimentation in order to find what works for you. Here are some strategies that you might employ if you are trying to quit:
1) Go to Alcoholics Anonymous - this is the popular choice among people, and it certainly works for some. But there is a large group of people for whom AA does not really work, so there needs to be alternatives. Some people get stuck in the mindset that if AA does not work for them, then they are doomed to failure and just resign themselves to drinking. This attitude is not necessary and can keep you from getting sober. There are other paths. If AA works for you, that is great. If not, then move on and try other things. If you can’t stop drinking alcohol one way then you should try the alternatives.
2) Counseling or therapy – some alcoholics have found success in recovery by going to see a therapist or counselor on a regular basis. The whole key, of course, is action–whether you are seeing a therapist or going to AA meetings. The bottom line is that the individual has to take action and make big changes in their life. So if you can get motivated to make these big life changes through seeing a counselor, then this path might work well for you.
3) Holistic growth – This is really more of a long term strategy for lasting sobriety, but it is included here because it is still a viable method for staying sober in the long run. If you want to live a sober life and continue to grow and develop, then you should do so from a holistic standpoint and seek multiple areas of your life in which you can progress.
