Finding Inexpensive Auto Insurance for Teenage Drivers

Young drivers are at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to finding affordable auto insurance, since they fall into the high risk car insurance group. They don’t have a history of safe, responsible driving and let’s face it, teenagers aren’t exactly known for obeying the speed limit. Because of this, teenagers will almost always pay the highest auto insurance rates.  So is cheap car insurance for young drivers a pipe dream?  Well, probably.  But there are a few things they can do to minimize the damage to your wallet.

One thing teenagers can do is take a driver education or driver safety class.  Most insurance companies are willing to give you a small break on the premiums for successful completion of a driver safety course. Why?  Because lack of experience is among the most common cause of automobile accidents among teenagers.  While a driver education course won’t prepare your teen for every possible scenario out on the open road, it will at least expose them to the most common traffic situations they are likely to encounter.

Another common discount is the good student discount.  If your teenager maintains and A average in school (or perhaps a B average, depending on the insurance company), they will probably qualify for another discount.  Your child isn’t an A student, you say?  Well, the prospect of not being allowed to drive a car because insurance is too expensive should be good motivation.

It stands to reason that the more miles you drive, the greater the likelihood of an accident.  A teenager that only drivers 4 miles back and forth from school is far less likely to get into an accident than a teenager who drives 100 miles to school, then to a football game, then to a restaurant, and then to a movie.  Practically all insurance companies offer a low mileage discount, and it applies as much to teenagers as it does to adults.
