Rare Zoo Animals

There are many animals you have probably never heard of, but weird animals are interesting and are infrequently found in zoos or on nature preserves.  For example at the San Diego Zoo there are some rarezoo creatures that have the appearance of large worms, but move like snakes.

They are called Caecilians and are found mostly in or near the waters of rain forests. They come in a variety of colors, yet they do not have the typical skins of snakes. There are also larvae at the zoo that hatched from eggs and then use gills and tails for a short time, to help them feed on various plant life in the water. The gills and tail soon disappear thought as the animal grows.

A small lemur called an Aye Aye looks like a cross between a primate and a bat, with its dark coat and long floppy ears. In Madagascar this creature feeds on trees like a bat. It uses its long fingers to grab bugs like meal worms and grub, and at first glance this creature looks like something from a science fiction movie instead of a small primate.

If you like ugly as well as odd, the naked mole rat is one of many rare animals you could see in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Zoo Atlanta. Aside from its long front teeth and hairless body, these creatures have a very interesting life, working in colonies like ants and bees, with one queen and hundreds of workers.

There are many other strange looking or behaving creatures around the world. If you want to see something different, you probably don’t have to travel too far. You definitely do not need to travel around the globe to find some interesting creatures. While you may not be able to actually visit San Diego or Atlanta, you might call the closest zoo and find out if they have anything unusual. Many zoos do have at least one or two special creatures. If you cannot go to see these creatures, you can always find information, pictures, and video about them online.
