Cowboy boots are specially designed keeping the activities generally performed by the cowboy that is, taking care of cattle usually astride a horse and attending to other duties related to ranches.
Cowboys have to be typically attired so that they may carry out their duties efficiently and one of the items of their dress is the boots they wear. All boots worn by these herders have high heels and rounded or pointed toes.
It is interesting to note that traditionally cowboy boots were fashioned out of leather but more often out of expensive yet outlandish material like skins of alligator, snake, buffalo, elephant or other similar bizarre hides.
The manufacturing of cowboy boots never did enjoy standardization because companies guarded their secret closely leading to variation in fitting from one company to the other. The two types of cowboy boots, comprising of classic and the roper, are easily distinguishable by their style and design.
Cowboy boots are a class apart and as they are to be used by the nearly nomadic cattle care-takers. They are made to assist the cowboy to get on and off the horse-back quickly. The pointed or rounded toe helps to slip the foot comfortably into the stirrup and the angled high heel makes it practically impossible for the foot to slip forward from it.
The trend today is mass production of cowboy boots, making them cheaper and readily available to a common man involved in herding. In marshy or wet lands, the high heel kept the foot clean and dry.
As the duties of the cowboy changed, so did the design of their boots. Usually cowboy boots are decorated with fancy items like metallic stars or studs. Creativity can best be seen in cowboy boots of modern day when fashion and comfort are equally important.
Women can also wear Nine West boots to look classic.
