Choosing a propane heater to provide the heating you require for your home has a lot of benefits. Propane heaters are, in general, environmentally friendly, efficient, and cost effective.

The variety in the design of heaters is enormous, therefore, you should take the time to research the different options, making sure you choose the perfect solution to fill your needs. One of the decisions you will have to make, is whether you want a vented or ventless propane heater.

Why Are some Propane Heaters Vented?

Depending on what temperature it is being burned at, propane can produce a harmful gas known as carbon monoxide. This gas is odorless, colorless, and can be fatal, so it is not something to be taken lightly. To protect the consumer from carbon monoxide traditional heaters, such a propane fireplaces, have had a vent leading the gasses outside, where they will do no harm.

How Do Ventless Propane Heaters Avoid the Dangerous Gases?

To prevent carbon monoxide to enter the room, ventless propane heaters burn at temperatures much higher than traditional units. When burning at such extreme temperatures the dangerous gas burns off and never enters the room. No vent is then required, and, as added bonuses, the high temperature makes the unit provide even more efficient and effective heating.

Is this Really Safe?

As mentioned earlier, carbon monoxide gases are certainly not to be taken lightly. Caution is recommended. Ventless systems have been put through rigorous testing, and the research has concluded that they are effective in burning off carbon monoxide to the point where no side effects remain.

As an added safety measure, most ventless units have a feature, which automatically turns off the unit, if the oxygen level of the room becomes too low. However, just to be on the safe side, it is recommended to use ventless propane heaters as a secondary source of heating.
