Whether it is due to the green movement or the digital age movement, more and more people are turning to portable ebook readers for something to read. It isn’t exactly a book burning but it is inevitable that paper books will go the way of the dinosaur.
There are critics of digital readers but frankly, the pros outweigh the cons. A lot of the issues of e-readers have been addressed but let’s go over them once again.
Some argue that the glare on ebooks make it hard to read but this is false because a lot of e-readers use E-ink technology because it mimics the look of a paper page. Also, e-readers such as Amazon Kindle and others don’t use a back-light so that in itself solves a lot of the glare issues.
Then there are those concerned about the battery issue. In the latest version of the ultra-popular Amazon Kindle DX, the battery life lasts 2 weeks on a single charge if you use the 3G capability wisely. If you’re a book lover, you can easily read a book within that time.
And that’s the thing about e-readers. They are more than just a single book. You can download other books through wireless technology. Imagine having thousands of books at your disposal. Imagine saving all that shelf space and as well as saving your back from carrying all those books.
Just like typewriters gave way to computers and file servers replaced cabinets, pretty soon portable ebook tablets will also replace books. Imagine a day when students will only need to carry one thin tablet where it can serve as a reading device and also be interactive so they can do their homework and their tests. It is practical and it is the future.
For those who prefer to have a physical book in their hands, let’s not forget it is the words on the page that count and not the form of the book itself.
