Survival of the Fittest Requires Careful Planning

The Boy Scout’s motto is always be prepared.  Now, even if you weren’t a Boy Scout, there’s no reason not to follow this advice.  After all, in times of emergency, you want to take care of yourself and your family.

The world is climate is in such turmoil right now.  Whether you believe that climate change is due to man-made interference or the disasters are natural, the fact remains you don’t want to get caught in one unprepared.  If the news headlines aren’t enough to scare you to being proactive, then nothing will.

In an emergency kit, you need to have a few things packed away that will sustain you and your family for 72 hours until help arrives.  Obviously, the most important items are food and water.  For each member of the family, it is recommended to have 1 gallon a day available for drinking and sanitation purposes.
As for food, one can make do with canned foods and granola bars.  However, if you can get your hands on some military mres on sale, this would be ideal.  MREs stand for meals ready to eat and they are individual packages of food complete with entrée, dessert, drink and heating element.  They come in civilian and military grade and the variety in MRE meals is quite good.

You also know that if it is military grade, it’s top notch in nutritional value. Items you should include in your emergency kit include a first aid kit, blankets, flashlight, radio and batteries.

If anyone in your family has special needs, you should prepare for them too.  For instance, if you have a baby, would you have enough diapers and formula available?

Once you have an emergency kit prepared, always make sure everything is working properly and to replace food items once they have expired.  You owe yourself and your family to always be prepared.
