Birdbaths not only add to the appearance of our gardens but they also provide a means for our feathered friends to bathe and get water. There are a large variety of birdbaths such as ones on pedestals, hanging birdbaths, birdbaths made from concrete, ceramic and copper.
They come in a variety of colors as well. Some birdbaths have a constant flowing water feature which should be considered if you will keep the birdbath outdoors during the winter in freezing temperatures. This way the water will not freeze and cause cracking.
Concrete birdbaths attract a large variety of birds. There are many different designs to choose from as well as different sizes. Since concrete is very heavy be certain you know exactly where you will position the birdbath.
The birdbath should be no more than 3 inches deep. To decrease the depth you can always add decorative rocks and pebbles. Be sure to place the birdbath where there is a tree limb near by to give the birds a place to rest and also so they can escape any potential cats or other predators. Birds will not slip on a concrete surface and the surface should never be painted.
Copper birdbaths should not have any treatment on them and should always be purchased untreated. These birdbaths are a beautiful addition to any garden. The birdbath will darken over time but this only adds to their beauty.
Ceramic birdbaths are really pieces of art since most of them are hand-made. They weigh anywhere from 10 to 20 pounds. Ceramic birdbaths hold up well during all seasons and are not affected by the heat and do not corrode.
They require a little less maintenance than the the other types of birdbaths. They also seem to stay clean better. If you have a lot of birds in your yard or garden you should consider purchasing a wider birdbath.
If keeping the birdbath outdoors during the winter months consider purchasing one with a flowing water fountain. Also a heated birdbath is suggested for winter months. Be sure to place the birdbath out of direct sunlight.
Change the water frequently to ensure a clean birdbath as well as to keep your birdbath in good working order for many years to come.
