The Fear of Driving Alone

The fear of driving may seem a bit overwhelming to you but for most it is manageable when you are driving with someone. But what about when you are driving on your own? Do you find that your fear becomes a full blown panic attack? If so then you definitely have a fear of driving alone. This is not uncommon and can be overcome with the right treatment and mindset.

Do you remember when your fear of driving became apparent? For most driving phobics it was a continual process that became worse and worse with time. In fact for most it was so long ago that they could not pinpoint any particular time when they could say it began.

This is because when you develop a phobia, it is through a series of events that collect in your mind and as a group, tell you to be fearful of driving. You may have had a few bumps or some bad experiences throughout your lessons and gradually, your mind has come to the conclusion that driving isn’t safe and that you are afraid of driving.

Now there is a way to overcome this and its not as hard as you think. You don’t have to go through any kind of counseling and you won’t have to take any strong prescribed drugs. Instead, you just have to train your mind to think that driving is safe and a pleasurable experience.

It may scare you the first few times you drive alone but remember that those anxious feelings are what got you here in the first place so try to put yourself at ease. Start by taking a small trip just to the local store and back. If you don’t feel comfortable in the parking lot, park out on the road.

If you don’t feel comfortable at that intersection then go another way. Once you have a bit more confidence and less anxiety about driving, you can tackle things that would previously make you have a panic attack. Phobias shouldn’t rule our lives so don’t let your phobia of driving ruin yours. Good luck!
