When checking out new fly fishing reels it is important to know what to look for. There are a couple of options to look at when buying a new reel, either a conventional reel or the fixed spool reel. The conventional reel is normally used for saltwater fishing and it works from revolving spools. The fixed spool reel is the type of reel which has spools that don’t move.
The cheaper of these two reels is the fixed spool reel and this is the best choice for the beginner fly fisherman. The fixed spool reel is made with a port or an axle where the spool rotates. This reel comes with a bail arm that draws the fishing line. The bail arm moves in and out to efficiently lie down on the line. The fixed spool reel opens to create the cast and holds the line with your fingertip and then shoots.
Spinning reels come in different sizes and range from light to medium large sizes. This type of reel is not as sensitive as the bait casting type of reel. The big spinning reels may be too bulky but they are the best when it comes to the accommodation when using heavy bait and lure. The backlash is not as likely to happen when using the spinning reel.
Bait casting reels fit in the hand and use best when used when catching small salt water fish. It is sensitive to very slight movement at the end of the line when it is casting and would not be right for the ultra light fishing line size.
The spin casting reel is a combination of both the conventional and fixed spool reels. This type of reel is a great reel for beginners to use, it is also known as a push button reel because in order for it to work it only takes a slight push of the button.
